Profile

Name: Bogota Chamber of Commerce

Type of organization: Regional or local development agency

Description:

We are a private, not-for-profit organization whose long-term goal is to foster a prosperous Bogota-region, through services and agendas that strengthen the private sector’s capabilities and develop the business environment, aiming at improving its competitiveness and promoting the generation of shared value.

Since 2012 the Bogota Chamber of Commerce has been promoting and leading cluster initiatives in some of Bogota-region key economic sectors such as apparel; jewelry; footwear, leather and leather products; business and events-related tourism; gastronomy; music; creative and content-related industries; dairy; software and IT; energy; graphic communications; cosmetics; and health. Through these cluster initiatives different actors from the private and public sectors as well as academia interact in order to address different type of bottlenecks that hinder these clusters’ competitiveness. Currently there are more than 3.000 actors participating in the different institutional settings provided by the cluster initiatives.

In 2015, with a strong leadership by the Chamber of Commerce, Bogota started putting in place its Regional Innovation Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3) as a way of focalizing and aligning the efforts and resources of numerous actors from the private and public sectors and academia. Under its RIS3 Bogota has defined the following 5 priority areas: “Bogota Creative Region”, “Bio-hub”, “Enterprise Services”, “Advanced Knowledge Hub”, and “Sustainable City-Region”.

With these cluster development initiatives and RIS3 strategy in place, supported by some new national-level policies (ie. Productive Development Policy and Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy) under our National Competitiveness, Science, Technology, and Innovation System, Bogota is poised for implementing a deep productive development agenda that should result in the sophistication and diversification of its economic structure as a way to achieve high levels of economic and social prosperity.
