Organising clusters for innovation: lessons from city regions in Europe (Reports and Studies)
This report offers a fresh perspective on city regions, economic development, innovation and clusters. Chapter 2 outlines the seven gaps that create obstacles for innovation, i.e. the creation of new products, processes, services and business models that enter into use and create commercial value. Clusters are particularly important for the second half of the equation. Cluster dynamics is partly a natural process, but also a matter of construction by all actors on the cluster scene. Cities have access to a range of instruments that can be used to bridge those innovation gaps, and can build identities around clusters. The report is completed by many good examples in the CLUSNET cities.

European Clusters Go International: Networks and clusters as instruments for the initiation of international business cooperation (On Cluster Initiatives)
Creating stronger linkages between distant clusters with complementary strengths is one of the most promising ways to get access to the most advanced technologies, best know-how or prospective markets. Changes in the global economic environment also make cluster linkages at international level more important. As firms within clusters internationalize in creative ways, it is important that cluster initiatives and cluster organizations internationalize as well. Most actors that take part in clusters are interested in learning from each other and in developing concrete activities with partners in other geographical locations world-wide. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the main barriers and drivers for these activities and their development. Future policy measures can only be effective, if the actual demand of the cluster organizations and cluster firms is known. This paper points out the benefits of the internationalization of clusters and highlights the key success factors leading to an effective internationalization strategy of clusters.
