The association Aachen Centre of Competence for Medical Technology - AKM e.V. was established in February 2003 as a friendly association aiming at strengthening and supporting medical technology in the Aachen region. The articles of the association state its objectives as follows: information transfer, providing cooperation partners, promotion of young scientists and research in the field of medical engineering. These aims are achieved with the extensive network of members and promoters. The association is represented by the management board consisting of three members: Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitz-Rode, Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering (HIA), Dr. Arnold Gillner, Fraunhofer Institute for Lasertechnology (ILT) and Bernd Thomas, Aachener Gesellschaft für Innovation und Technologietransfer mbH (AGIT). An advisory board is affiliated to the association. It consists of representatives from research, politics, healthcare and industry. The advisory board supports and evaluates the R&D projects of AKM
