The four-day agenda included key elements to understand the actual competitiveness scenario: smart-specialization, the intelligent diversification that creates synergies across different socio-economic activities and that requires new cross-sectoral approaches; the different levels of cluster dynamics involves urban economic development at city level and cross-border cooperation at trans-national and trans-regional level in meta-clusters; the socio-economic aspects of competitiveness and the need to create conditions that enable continuous innovation; the importance of emotions and values for successful and innovative cluster development and management. The 8 tracks of the conference offered participants innovative approaches and tools to deepen into these challenges.

A global line-up of prominent speakers and leading cluster experts, Walter Deffaa, Carlos Härtel, Tim Jenkins, Fulong Wu, Andoni Aldekoa, Michael Penfold, Janamitra Devan, Flora Montealegre, Guillermo Ulacia, Klaus Haasis, Örjan Sölvell, Göran Lindqvist, Cecilia Johansson and Isabelle Lebo, inspired participants with their leading thoughts and developments. Michael Porter, interviewed by Christian Ketels, acknowledged the TCI network in its 15th anniversary.

Through the cluster tours and the 4 days immersion in the Basque Country, delegates could experience and learn about the results of one of the regions with a longer trajectory in cluster and competitiveness policy in the world.

At the TCI general assembly, the report on last year strategy and results was presented and approved by the members. TCI has grown in recent years to a network up to 4,000 cluster experts from 111 countries. A partial renewal of the Board took place with the election of 4 new Directors: Karin Gjerløw Høidahl, Frédéric Miribel, Manuel Montoya, Werner Pamminger, and the reelection of Alberto Pezzi as new Treasurer.

The 16th TCI Annual Global Conference will take place in Kolding, Southern Denmark on September 3-6, 2013.
