Asia Pacific - A New TCI Regional Initiative

The initiative on India was started on behalf of TCI by Amit Kapoor, Professor of Strategy and Industrial Economics, MDI, Gurgaon, India & Chairman of the Institute for Competitiveness in 2008.

The initiative looks at deepening the association of cluster practitioners and researchers in the region. The Asia Pacific Initiative is working in association with Institute for Competitiveness, India to have city tours propagating the idea of competitiveness of locations. It foresees to work with city and state governments to enhance the competitiveness.

The first initiative was the celebration of a special session on India at TCI Annual Conference in Cape Town, South Africa titled "India - The Dancing Elephant'. A total of 54 papers were received and 8 were shortlisted for presentation at the Conference. The Institute for Competitiveness, India supported by giving a travel subsidy to two participants from India for attending the conference and continues to look at supporting the initiative.

The Asia Pacific Initiative would conduct a follow up session at the TCI Conference in Jyväskylä, October 2009. This time over the focus would be India and China for the Asia - Pacific Conference. The session is being chaired by Professor Amit Kapoor. The initiative is also looking at hosting Christian Ketels in India in February, 2009.

Furthermore, the Asia Pacific Initiative is organizing a Regional Conference on Indian Competitiveness. The two day conference would be held on 19-20th of January 2010 at New Delhi. The conference looks at having over 150 experts in the area of competitiveness, strategy and clusters converge into Delhi to work and share ideas on enhancing competitiveness of firms, clusters and regions in the country. The conference would also have a component on Cluster Tours and interaction with the bureaucracy. The conference is chaired by Professor Amit Kapoor and Jagat Shah.

The Institute for Competitiveness is working on releasing the State Competitiveness Report in India and looks at furthering the cause of competitiveness in the region. As we progress further we could look at a regional competitiveness study. The initiative also intends deepening the association of the idea of Competitiveness with media over the next year. By April 2010, TCI Asia Pacific regional initiative looks at having a member base of around 500 from Asia Pacific region.
