Two TCI Directors, Frederic Miribel and Alberto Pezzi, and some TCI members participated at the II Saint Petersburg International Cluster Conference titled as "Green Corridors for the Clusters" that took place on 11-12 May. The event showed the great interest that cluster policies and methodologies for cluster development are raising in Russia and highlighted the main recent trends like FDI attraction, enterprise modernization or cluster management professionalization among others. Some participants envisaged more cooperation of Russian clusters with international counterparts as well as more visibility of the work undergone in the world largest country.

TCI Network – the leading global network of organisations and practitioners with expertise in clusters and competitiveness – celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2017. As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, the TCI Network Board of Directors invites submissions to an essay competition. The competition is open to all with an interest in clusters and competitiveness, and is targeted especially to young researchers and economic development practitioners.

On 22 November 2017, cluster practitioners from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Spain participated in the sixth webinar of the new TCI Latin American Chapter series. The session focused on Perspectives of cluster initiatives in the world and was moderated by Jaime Echeverri, Vice President of Planning and Development in the Chamber of Commerce of Medellin for Antioquia, Colombia.

At the end of May date 24th and 25th experts from Sweden, Germany and Basque country, came to Latvia to fulfill a peer review exercise on clusters policy development for implementation of RIS3 strategy in Latvia. Peer review exercise were organized by Ministry of Economics which is one of the 9 project partners.

In the framework of the Interreg Europe project CLUSTERS3 “Leveraging Cluster Policies for successful implementation of RIS3, six peer reviews were organized and hosted by 6 of the project partner regions: Basque Country (ES), Hadjú-Bihar (HU), Highland and Islands (UK), Latvia (LV), Lubelskie (PL) and Northern Ireland (UK). TCI Network, as advisory partner, looked for the selection of international experts in the field of cluster policy and smart specialization, selecting cluster practitioners with solid background and experience.

The theme of TCI 2018, “Collaborating to Compete: Clusters in Action,” reflects not only the heart of cluster development (collaboration), but is also a call to action for those within the cluster ecosystem to share how clusters can jumpstart transformational changes that benefit both firms and communities (shared value). More importantly, attending is a rare opportunity to make “unexpected connections” (TCI 2018’s tagline) that are only possible when people from diverse industries and backgrounds come together in person.

The 5th biennial cluster event of the TCI-Network’s Oceania chapter, ‘Why Clusters Matter – Growing Regional Trade & Investment through Clusters’, was held on 5-8 June 2018 at the Surfair Conference & Event Centre, Marcoola Beach, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, and has been hailed a great success. International cluster experts came to share their experiences in cluster development, management, performance measurement and internationalisation with delegates from around Australia and the Oceania region.

EU-LAC Foundation and the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIG) are running a Project called Competitiveness Clusters. The goal is to contribute to improve the international competitiveness of the EU and LAC through greater economic cooperation and joint actions between regions, including organisations and practitioners, being this cooperation based on the cluster approach and value chains.

On 16-18 October, 330 cluster experts from across Canada and around the world met in Toronto, Canada, for the 21st TCI Global Conference organized by the Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity, an Ontario based economic think tank. Participants from 37 countries were able to share success stories of Canada, the clusters of Toronto region, to learn about best practices from around the world and to create a forum for knowledge exchange and partnership development between local and international cluster leaders.
